Carferry History PM 18 run aground History Column Dave Petersen There are times on the lakes when endurance and skill are the special of the day. When something needed to be done, that was all that the men needed to know. A "can do" attitude prevailed and everyone pulled together to make it work regardless of how impossible or difficult the job might seem to be. During the 1926 season the Pere Marquette 18 II had run aground south of Manitowoc this series of photographs show the work done to lash the stern of the 17 with the PM 18 in order to remove railcars and lighten the load of the PM 18 enough that the 17 and a harbor tug could pull her free. Pic 001 This makes me think of the spacecraft aligning to dock at the space station. Imagine the skill of the captain in positioning his ship to line up and be able to remove loaded boxcars from one ship to another in Lake Michigan. #002 003 Crewmembers gather on the deck of Pere Marquette 17 as a boxcar is transferred to the deck of Pere Marquette 18(II). Two center strings of railcars before she was pulled free by the 17 and a harbor tug. 004 A boxcar passes beneath the seagates of the Pere Marquette car ferries 17 and 18. 005 The starboard wing track on the car deck of the City of Flint 32. 006 An empty gondola car is secured close to the stern on Pere Marquette 22's starboard wing track while a standard boxcar nearly touches the seagate on the port center track. Once the job was done it was on to the other tasks and finishing the day and the trip across Lake Michigan.
