Article 301 History Column Dave Petersen In February of 1941 The Ludington Daily News put out a paper that looked at the history of a number of businesses that were in operation at the time. The occasion was the celebration of 75 years, the diamond anniversary of the founding of the original paper in Ludington. The Daily News is a direct descendent of that paper and is at this time has been in business 134 years. I thought it would be interesting to look over some of the concerns that were highlighted in that edition. If you have photographs to share with our readers please contact me at 757-3240, e-mail to davep@blackcreekpress.com, or mail in care of the Ludington Daily News, P.O. Box 340, Ludington, MI, 49431 Pic1 Knebl's Cleaning was established in 1907 by Joseph Knebl and in 1941 was in its 34th year. Starting out at 402 W Ludington Avenue, the site of the current House of Flavors the business moved over to 104 E Loomis where the building underwent several renovations. (pictured is the first) Pic2 Smith's recreation was established in 1905 by J.B. Smith and was a well frequented billiard, bowling and lunch hall. The current site of Hoyt's Sportsman's Bar. The first bowling lanes were added in 1916 and at the time there were a dozen billiard tables. The entrance is to the left and the Kozy theatre is also evident in this picture. Pic3 Lageson's Danish Bakery at 605 S Washington Avenue was founded by Julius Lageson and derived its name from its original location, in Denmark. Pictured is the Lageson's Bakery as it appeared circa 1900 in the old country. Pic4 P.C. Hansen purchased a Fourth Ward business from the Danaher and Melendy Company in 1896. This became the basis of the furniture store he operated at the corner of Ludington and James (Fort Ludington site) before moving to 127 S. James St. Pic5 George's Appliance's was of course owned by not one but two George's, Usiak and Greiner and established in 1941. The ad proclaims that you could purchase BOTH the Thor ringer washer and the ironer for a mere 49.95 (with trade in of old washer) Would that have been a scrubber and a rock? Pic6 The Bell Telephone Company was established in the early 1880's not that long after Bell invented the telephone in 1875. The local business went through a succession of changes as the device once a toy for the rich became a common tool of the everyday man and by 1941 there were 2500 phones in the city.
