Article 348 History Column Dave Petersen This week we have a series of pictures that first appeared in the 1955 Mason County Centennial Edition of the Daily News. The Centennial was a big event in the county and many people took part in the festivities from dressing in period costumes to taking part in the beard and mustache growing competitions. We are only about 44 years out from the Bi-Centennial, is it too early to start planning? If you have photographs to share with our readers please contact me at 757-3240, e-mail to davep@blackcreekpress.com, or mail in care of the Ludington Daily News, P.O. Box 340, Ludington, MI, 49431 Pic1 The Abrahamson Nerheim Company was located on South Washington Avenue and supplied building materials, ice and coal. Martin Abrahamson founded the company in 1907 dealing primarily in coal and in 1911 he partnered with Steffen Nerheim to supply ice. B 1919 the companies were incorporated under one name and at that time expanded into building supplies. By the early 1950's a Speedway 79 Service Station and fuel oil supply station was added. Pic2 A 1914 view of the interior of the Goodsell hardware store which was established by BJ Goodsell about 1875. The location at 128 W Ludington Avenue was the home of Ludington's hardware needs for generations as the business passed to the Ackersville's and then to Wally Wrege who represented the 4th generation of this families business in downtown Ludington. Pic3 Lee Fellows was one of a dozen or more small business owners in the City of Ludington alone that had a gas service station. This was a time when we truly knew our neighbors and the service was personalized and friendly. Pic4 We all scream for ice cream! Guy Hawley established the Park Dairy in the back of the Park Store back in 1929. Roland Benedict became one of Hawley's partners and is shown here packaging quarts of ice cream in 1955. Albert Miller partnered with Robert Neal and in 1955 the facility was churning out 600 gallons of ice cream a day. In 2011 The House of Flavors has become as much an iconic Ludington landmark as the SS Badger. Pic5 The Stearns Hotel is another Ludington landmark and we see few pictures of the inside of the business but here is a uncluttered view of the Ossawald Crumb Taproom and Lounge inside the Stearn's Hotel in 1955. Don't know Ossawald Crumb? You can see an earlier column on this character at http://ludingtonmichigan.net Pic6 Schohl's Jewelry Store in the National Bank building occupied a storefront that was home to Jewelry stores for over 100 years. Gene Schohl who many people knew took over from his father who bought the business in 1928. Currently the site of the Twisted Arrow Gift Shop.
